Metadata checker: see what your files give away

Drop in a photo, PDF or Word, Excel or PowerPoint file. You get a plain-English list of what it reveals, sorted by risk. Then remove what can be removed, and we read the cleaned copy again to show you what is gone.

JPEG · PNG · WebP · HEIC · AVIF · TIFF · PDF · DOCX · XLSX · PPTX

Or drop a file here, or paste an image.

Your file is read by this page, inside your browser. It is never uploaded.

How the re-check works

  1. The checker reads the file in your browser and lists every field it understands, with a short note on why it matters.
  2. When you choose Remove metadata and re-check, it builds a cleaned copy. For JPEG, PNG and WebP it removes metadata blocks and copies the image data byte for byte, so the picture is not re-compressed.
  3. It then analyzes the cleaned copy from scratch, as if you had dropped in a new file, and compares the two. You see what was removed, anything that could not be removed, and anything kept on purpose, such as the tag that keeps a photo upright.

What it can't do

Is it really local?

Yes. The page loads its code once, then reads your file with your browser's own file APIs. The site's security policy only allows the page to talk to metadatachecker.com itself and to Cloudflare's privacy-focused page-view counter, and neither receives your file. If you want to check, open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and drop a file in: you will see no upload. The only request the checker itself makes is an anonymous count of the action (for example "checked a JPEG"), with no file contents, names or values. Details are in the privacy policy.
